Дааа... когда начинаешь задумываться о ДФ, надежда испаряется. Ведь правда, всё указывает на то, что что-то здесь нечисто. Либо Незнакомец не моряк, но куда он в таком случае испарился и собирается ли возвращаться, либо моряк, но его корабль не в понедельник уходит. Такой вот загадочный товарищ.

Нора, ему не было смысла лгать. Подумаешь, сказал, в какой день недели уходит его корабль. Он ведь не о своей личной жизни рассказывал. А Мари, как мне показалась, улыбнулась в ответ на показное равнодушие Лиззи, а совсем не потому, что ее брат солгал. Она сразу раскусила подружку и поняла, что Лиззи неровно дышит к Незнакомцу, но всеми силами старается скрыть это. У Мари удивительно красноречивые глаза. Все понимающие, умные, проницательные. А улыбка какая! Снисходительная улыбка умного и много повидавшего человека.

Дамы, немножко пооффтоплю. Хотите прочесть книгу о мужской психологии и взгляде сильного пола на супружество, на жену, детей и т.д.? Эрве Базен "Супружеская жизнь". После долгих и безуспешных поисков я таки обнаружила роман в сети. Очень рекомендую. Обращайтесь, вышлю. :) Потрясающе ироничная, умная, точная и искренняя книга. Мы с моим супругом читали ее на заре нашей супружеской жизни. Хохотали оба. Некоторые детали привели в совершеннейший восторг. :)

It's not so much that the 35-year old actor has stayed under the radar; it's just that he hasn't been acting for that long. "Я был буквально на расстоянии в одну неделю от получения специальности адвоката после изучения этого в течение 5 лет - был президентом университетского юридического общества и проходил практику в главной юридической фирме в Шотландии," объясняет Батлер. "Но я сошел с рельс. Я был полностью разочарован тем, куда завела меня жизнь, и когда они меня увольняли, они сказали, что это для моей же пользы. Я сказал себе непосредственно, "Хорошо, знаешь что? «Я должен был находиться в воде по горло, в непромокаемом костюме, но когда я вышел из воды, я понял, что костюм промок», говорит Батлер об одной из сцен из фильма «Беовульф и Грендель». «я думал, что замерзну до смерти. Когда я его (костюм) снял, из него вылился объем воды равный моему весу. У меня было несколько несчастных случаев в этом фильме, он я думаю, что очень часто материал, который вы передаете через места(имеются ввиду пейзажи) и погоду (возм. атмосфера) – этот материал кажется еще более удивительным. Я на это очень надеюсь, если же нет, то я после этого должен уйти».

Не многие известные голливудские актеры согласятся поехать на 3 месяца в Исландию, чтобы сняться в фильме, основанном на старой английской легенде, но Батлер сказал да, так как сценарий, по его описанию, был «удачным и поэтически красивым».

Так, что относительно маленький бюджет фильма означает меньшее количество специфектов и вдвое больше трюков? Аналогичная ситуация и со следующим фильмом «Бернс», основанным на жизни шотландского поэта 18 века Роберта Бернса. Утвержденный на главную роль, Батлер восторженно отзывается о сценарии, который по его мнению затрагивает весьма сложные вещи. В то время как Бернс может быть непонятным большинству североамериканских зрителей, истинные шотландцы будут наблюдать за тем, может ли Батлер сделать это.

«К черту их», говорит Батлер самоуверенно. «Это выглядит так: Эту истории каждый шотландец хотел бы рассказать. В таком случае, если они захотят устроить мне трудные времена стараясь рассказать это, у меня не будет на это времени. (в переводе последней строки не уверена: It's like this: It's a story that everybody in Scotland would love to be told. С двумя фильмами, идущими в кинотеатрах, и ещё многими на горизонте, Джерард Батлер поддерживает традицию своих соотечественников Роберта Карлайла, Джона Ханнана и Шона Коннери.

Сильный шотландский акцент, поющий для меня на том конце провода "С днём рождения", принадлежит Джерарду Батлеру, звезде "Призрака Оперы" Эндрю Ллойда Уэббера и новой прелестной шотландской драмы "Дорогой Фрэнки". Батлеровская интерпретация поздравительной песенки очаровательна, но действительно, не нужно было. В конце концов, сегодня не мой день рождения.

Как выясняется, пока журналист Мирамакса соединяет меня по одной линии, возбуждённый Батлер делает звонок по другой. "Я весь день сидел перед камерой и за телефоном, у меня не было ни секунды, чтобы что-то сделать", - объясняет он, смеясь, - "а сейчас я звоню бывшей подружке, у неё сегодня день рождения".

Батлер звонит авиадиспетчеру с просьбой задержать вылет, - это понятно, учитывая занятость в эти дни 35-летнего жителя Глазго. После окончания работы над "Призраком" и "Фрэнки" он уже снялся в двух картинах: "Игре их жизней" о футбольном матче между Великобританией и Соединёнными Штатами в Кубке Мира 1950 года; и в "Беовульфе и Гренделе", основанном на эпической поэме, в котором Батлер играет скандинавского воина, сражающегося с троллем Гренделем. В драме Шоны Ауэрбах, снятой в портовом городе Гринок, у героя Батлера даже нет имени. Поначалу он прочём сценарий только из любезности к кастинг-режиссёру (прим.перев. – пардон, как там грамотно называются лица, ответственные за актёрский состав...), Дезу Гамильтону, с которым он дружит очень давно, - ещё до погружения в киноиндустрию. Хотя Гамильтон думал, что его приятель был лучшим Незнакомцем для его картины, он (Батлер) отверг предложение после прочтения первых семи страниц. "Это было не для меня", - вспоминает он. – "Я увидел маленького мальчика, переезжающего с семьёй, потом он покупает сигареты, и он глухой, и он покупал их для своей бабушки, и в то же время покупал чипсы и рыбу... Я подумал: "О чём вообще это кино?""

В честь своего обещания Гамильтону он снова взял сценарий и прочёл его целиком. На этот раз он был очарован очевидной простой сказки и уверяет, что хотя Фрэнки и глухой, но потеря слуха не рассматривается в его случае как предмет для жалости или слащавой сентиментальности, это лишь ещё один факт в жизни мальчика.

"Я даже понял гениальность будничности, прозаичный способ открытия этой истории, потому что таким образом она действительно захватывает тебя", замечает Батлер после второго, более внимательного прочтения сценария. "Никакая история, кроме рассказанной в настоящем, будничном тоне не заставляет так в неё погрузиться".

"Это маленькая история, но по существующим фактам, по человеческим взаимоотношениям, по чувствам и отношений это целая эпопея".

Кроме того, это предложение предоставило Батлеру возможность взяться за редкую практичную роль. Хотя он и отмечает, что играл Марка Рентона на сцене в Trainspotting, доктора в возобновлённой Уэст-эндовской версии "Внезапно прошлым летом" Теннеси Уильямса и выздоравливающего алкоголика в 6-серийном британском мини-сериале "Присяжные", но ему более привычны прослушивание для фильмов, где нужно играть нестандартных персонажей.

Выше, чем большинство актёров 188см и наделённый атлетическим телосложением и привлекательными чертами – всё это естественно. Но его резюме, и без того довольно удивительно благодаря ролям Призрака и Беовульфа, включает и такие недавние роли, как главный титулованный вампир в "Дракуле 2000", а также Аттилу. "Я мог бы попасть в Книгу рекордов Гиннеса за количество сыгранных главных ролей", - шутит актёр. На практике, говорит Батлер, изображение всех этих легендарных личностей или экшн-героев, вроде наёмника в "Ларе Крофт-2", часто требуются различного рода приготовления. "Обычно я прохожу хорошую подготовку, начиная работу над новой ролью, потому что часто требуются выдающиеся способности, которых у меня нет, но которые в результате должны быть", - признаётся он.

Но играя Незнакомца, он не нуждался в специальной подготовке. "С ним было просто", - настойчиво утверждает он, - "Я отождествлял себя с ним, я сразу же узнал этого парня, почувствовал его. Более того, я знал эту историю. Я знал маленького мальчика. Я знал, через что он прошёл. Через что прошла его мама. Я полюбил эту историю, восхищался ею".

Играя персонажа без имени и без прошлого, Батлер мог бы заполнить пустые графы в истории своего персонажа выдуманной предысторией и рядом мотивов и прчин, но в конце концов он решил, что всё это вовсе не нужно. "Сценарий настолько фантастичен, большая часть происходящего заложена не в строках. Главное между строк, за внешней оболочкой, в контексте", - замечает он.

"Интересно, - продолжает он, - если ты переживаешь эти моменты, то зрителю остаётся подняться за тобой, и они тоже начинают переживать вместе с тобой гораздо охотнее, чем если бы ты достал карту и стал совать им под нос".

Коллеги Батлера по съёмочной площадке также восхитили его. Он описывает Эмили Мортимер как настоящую актрису за её готовность испробовать все варианты исполнения одной сцены, и юный Джек МакЭлоун поразил его своей уверенностью и умением сохранять истину момента. Между тем команда была небольшой, солнце беспрерывно сияло в течение целых шести недель съёмок. "Я думал "Я никогда не видел Шотландию такой!", - восхищается он. – У нас как будто вечеринка была".

"Дорогой Фрэнки" предоставил Батлеру редкую возможность работать в одной стране. Пока он в полном смысле этого слова становится международной звездой и работает теперь по всему свету, он всё ещё говорит, что нет на свете такого места, как дом.

"По мне, нет ничего более уютного, чем возвращение домой", - говорит он. - "Я работал над небольшим фильмом, я уже расслабился и принял решение никогда больше не связываться со скучной, однообразной работой, убивая этим себя. Мы снимали в действительно милых и интересных местах, особенно вниз по пляжу Гринока".

Когда Батлеру было 14 лет, он видел научно-фантастический приключенческий фильм, который назывался "Крулл", который он описывает как нечто вроде "Властелина колец" с крайне низким бюджетом. Когда он смотрел его снова несколько лет назад, он понял, что это на самом деле не такое уж хорошее кино.

Но вскоре он был уволен со своей фирмы, что сподвигло его на переезд в Лондон и исполнение давнишнего заветного желания.

Крайне удивительно, но Батлер никогда не посещал школы драмы (?прим.перев. – может, всё-таки, театральной школы? - drama school). "У меня хорошо развита интуиция", - говорит он о своём ремесле. С "Дорогим Фрэнки" и "Призраком" в кинотеатрах и целым списком фильмов на горизонте, звезда Батлера определённо на подъёме. Не только потому что ему предлагают всё больше и больше сценариев, но он отмечает и что-то ещё.

"Эти сценарии, которые берёшь, читаешь и думаешь: "Ладно, хороший сценарий, но что он хотят предложить сыграть мне? Того парня, что ходит через чёрный ход и падает?", - задумывается он. – И вдруг мне говорят: "Нет, мы хотим, чтобы ты сыграл ЭТУ роль". Ты говоришь: "Эту? Которая мне понравилась? Ту, с которой я мог бы сделать что угодно?" А они: "Да, мы хотим видеть тебя в этой роли"."

"Это кайф", - признаётся он, - "это кайф".

А теперь слёзно прошу: Journalist, требуется работа! :D Я ведь знаю - у тебя всегда статеечка найдётся;) Впрочем, это ко всем относится: что-то давно никто оригиналов не подбрасывал;):D

Не знаю. :-))) И в первый, и во второй раз у меня было четкое ощущение, что в он говорит про корабль чересчур поспешно, как бы не желая по уши влезать в эту щекотливую ситуация: мы договариваемся и мы будем соблюдать "контракт" - это раз, Мари усмехается с интонацией "ну-ну, а что он еще сказал" - это два, когда он говорит, что ему надо идти, потому что завтра корабль отходит рано, возникает чуть заметная заминка, как будто бы он решил все-таки не выходить из роли, хотя что-то изменилось и роль его уже стесняет - это три. :-)))
Для меня он совершенно точно не моряк.

Butler: Actor and Phantom of the Opera

The name Gerard Butler got a mention in the Reign of Fire, Dracula 2001 and Tomb Raider credits, but many Indonesians have acquired the habit of tuning out after the big shots are listed.

The actor may yet win household recognition, however, with his portrayal of the Phantom in this month's The Phantom of the Opera, a feature film based on the famous stage play.

While at the Cannes Film Festival promoting Dear Frankie, the Scottish actor spared some time to talk to The Jakarta Post about the eagerly anticipated musical movie.

Question: How did you get the part in The Phantom of the Opera?

Answer: I hadn't heard of the project -- even though it has been around for 15 years -- until my agent got a call from writer-director Joel Schumacher, whom I'd met. Then I read the script while I listened to the music. I found it an earth-shattering experience.

I identified strongly with The Phantom like a lot of people do. I was blown away by it. I met Joel and I said, "I have to do this movie". I was forced to take a couple singing lessons and I had to sing in front of Andrew Lloyd Weber, with my legs shaking.


And then I got the role. Basically, he said "you can handle this". But I had to put in a lot of work. After months of training and movement -- singing obviously -- technical singing, songs from the show, I learned to get that fine line between being a technically good singer, and being able to express yourself.

There are many ways in which The Phantom can be interpreted because there's so much pain, emotion, sexuality in the role. I've finished now and have seen the 10-minute trailer. I've never been so excited about a movie coming out. It looks amazing.

What is Joel Schumacher like?

Joel is amazing. As a guy, he's exceptionally entertaining, funny, and cheeky; he always kept me in my place, never letting me get too big for my boots.

He's been with this project for more than 15 years now; you can tell that when you read the adaptation of the script. The way he's put everything down, the moments he's chosen, the things he's added, make the film so much more powerful.

That's what blew me away when I read the script. So I trusted him because, one, he's a great director, two, I could see.

He makes sure everything is under control. He knows exactly what he wants. You really felt you had a director that had complete control over the movie and production.

The best of Joel was he really let me do my thing in this movie. More than anything he cast the right actors for the right roles. And he wants to see what the actors have to offer.

What's more important for you when you choose a movie?

Most important is the screenplay. That has to speak to me in some way. Whether because it's funny, moving or it's original, or something I really don't think I can do.

I don't want to get a part that I can just go and do. It has to be the script, a good script. I've not always been able to say that, because that's not always been the case.

Sometimes I needed the work -- a job. I needed the money. It wasn't the scenario anymore, so now first the script, then the director and next, the cast.

You were a lawyer before. Why did you become an actor? Law school was challenging, but I did not find it a stimulating challenge. It was not exciting.

I didn't want to spend the rest of my life facing those challenges. I preferred to face the challenge of being an actor.

Did you have singing experience before The Phantom of the Opera?

Yes, but not that kind of music. I sang in a rock band for fun you know.

Do you remember the songs?

I can't remember. I was four. I don't know, but even when I sang in a rock band, I love to rock and roll but I also love to sing ballads, using the softer side of my voice.

I got the chance to do it in The Phantom of the Opera. But for me, more than anything, you've got to feel what you sing. Sometimes, when you are caught up in the singing, you can feel the soul of the singer.

Is it more difficult or fun to sing in an entire film?

I think it's more difficult. I mean it's strange to do that. There are things you have to deal with. One is singing with the mask on.

You also sing differently to the way you normally sing. When you sing in a recording studio, you use your lips differently to when you sing before a camera.

You try to avoid opening your mouth like a gaping hole because it looks horrible on the screen, especially in the close-ups (laughs).

So there are these things, and then there's learning to lip-sync. That is kinda strange, but I had to do all that and keep natural while acting.

When you are singing, you know you are less focused because you caught up in the technical side, so you panic. I learned from my technical music coach and musical director.

So you think you're a better singer now?

Oh my God, so much more so. The funny thing is I sing less for fun now. It's a bit strange.

Given the success of other musicals like Moulin Rouge and Chicago, do you feel that Phantom of the Opera will be a huge hit?

I have to say, everybody's involved in the film, they're unbelievably, quietly confident. The 10-minute trailer that I saw was one of the most powerful I'd ever seen.

This is one of the most successful musicals of all time. You know it's a story that will tear at your heart, make you laugh and cry, and make you think of so many things. You have all that in the movie -- and more.

Hardship and a chequered past have given Gerard Butler plenty to draw on for the role that could make him a star, writes Helen Barlow

HE'S GERRY TO his mates and to almost everyone who comes in contact with him. Yet no matter how likable and affable Gerard Butler is in person, with his leading role in the movie version of The Phantom of the Opera, the 35-year-old Glaswegian is poised on a precipice. He might be thrust to stardom. Or he might not.

Muscular, with an authoritative chin, piercing green eyes and a slow-burning masculinity that allows him to come across as sexy on screen, Butler might be compared to Russell Crowe. The pair have certainly had their days of being wild - and of being wildly drunk. Both have strong cultural heritages to draw on when playing masculine men on screen.

"That sense of the Scotsman as stoic and tough comes from Scottish history - the hardship, the wars and the fighting. The reason so many Scottish actors have done so well is that we have a lot of passion and sensitivity - and insanity, as well. We have a lot more going on, to be honest, than what your average American experiences in his life, and therefore we have more to say in cinematic terms."

Butler has more life experience to draw on than your average actor. A recovering alcoholic who was once what he calls "a down and dirty singer" in a band called Speed, he was days away from finishing a law degree when he was spotted in a cafe by actor-playwright Steven Berkoff and he decided to give acting a go.

"To be honest, I was doing a career that I didn't want to do," he says. "When I decided to take up acting, I was actually fired as a lawyer because of my drinking problem. It really got quite bad. I was a week away from qualifying, after giving it seven years of my life, and then they let me go. It just shows you the beautiful symmetry of life, because I didn't want to be a lawyer. I know many people who are lawyers now, who are 35, 40, 50, who never really wanted to be lawyers, but who got sucked into it. So, in actual fact it was a blessing in disguise. The next day I packed my bags, moved down to London and said, f*** it, you've ruined your life, why not aim for the stars.'"

Butler says he fell in love with the diversity of acting. Drawing on his talent for delving into the grey areas of his soul, he was attracted to characters that often surprise. Certainly, he seemed to charm the socks off Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, and it was never clear if he was as honourable as he seemed in Reign of Fire and Timeline. It's the kind of duality he's been able to bring to the character of the Phantom, a scarred musical genius who hides in the Paris Opera, longing for the love of a beautiful singer (played by 18-year-old Emmy Rossum from The Day After Tomorrow). The film features younger actors than planned - Antonio Banderas was once to have starred - and was shot amid remarkable sets. "It's dark and sad and sexy and passionate," says Butler. "And a musical."

Butler seems amused at the idea of having had to sing. "When I was in the band, I was training as a lawyer by day and I was a junk Jim Morrison by night," he says. "I thought I was anyway. In fact, I was kicked out of three of my own gigs. I once performed three songs standing in the street, screaming and shouting. At the biggest gig ever, I was thrown off stage twice because I was shouting abuse at the audience. I barely remember the gig. It was one of the last we ever did."

Has he changed? "Yeah completely," he says, puffing on one of many cigarettes he smokes during the interview. "You know I say those things lightly and as a joke, but they were hard times for me as a person and I've changed."

To take on the role of the Phantom, singing songs that half the planet had heard in Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, meant he had to develop a vastly different attitude to his vocal chords. "I was surprised by how quickly I came on in my singing - but, at the same time, I was surprised by how much work I had to do."

Well aware that he'd never win awards, he aimed to strike a balance between having emotion and quality in his voice. "Some things I was singing four times a day," he says. "I was singing early in morning with my technical coach, then I'd go to the studio and sing with the musical director, which was more performance. Then, I'd go on set and sing in the show and perform it all day long, and then I'd go into the recording studio and lay down for the tracks for the next scene. So, I was singing all the f***ing time."

Having seen the stage show in London and New York, Butler says he was keen to avoid theatrical campiness in the movie version (directed by Joel Schumacher) and make the Phantom more human. "The hardest thing though was sustaining the emotion. I mean, half the Phantom's journey is insanity and madness and having his guts ripped out, and I had to do that all day long. Quite often when you play a monster you wear so many prosthetics that you don't get to do much. Even if they took six hours to put the prosthetics on, I was able to do some serious acting.

"After having three people in my face for six hours, gluing a piece of string to my eyeball and pulling it down around my neck a lazy eye is part of the Phantom's deformity , I was, in fact, in a suitably insane frame of mind."

Is there an irony in being preened as a sexy new leading man and then playing a monster? "Yeah, but I love that because I want to be seen more as an actor who can take on interesting roles rather than just some sexy guy," Butler says. "Then I should just be a model - and I'm not good-looking enough to be a model."

Sporting a battered leather jacket, cropped hair and trendy sunglasses, Butler looks like a lad about town. Without a wife and children to settle him down, acting has provided a soothing influence and he says he's working through his demons at the same time.

"If there's one thing I say about myself as an actor, it's that I'm not scared to try and not be sexy - and I'm not scared to try and be lost and be unable to cope. But I know that I can go the other way, as well, and play it powerful. With The Phantom you have all those things going on. You have this exceptional accomplished person who has this power and charisma that's almost magical, but at the same time there's this side that's like a lost little boy."

Butler's own childhood was fraught. His parents moved their brood to Canada from Scotland, only to have their marriage fall apart. "I had the best mother on the planet," he says. "But I was brought up by a single mother with three kids who came back from Canada with nothing after leaving my dad.

"I didn't see my father for 14 years and he turned up one day and I didn't even know he was alive. So, there were a lot of powerful things to draw on. You know, through my own self-abuse I went to some pretty dark spaces, so that when I read this script, I could believe they were synonymous with the feelings of the Phantom."

Film sex can be a chore, but someone has to do it says Gerry

LUCKY movie hunk Gerry Butler has got to grips with some of Hollywood's sexiest leading ladies.

In just about every role the jammy Paisley-born actor has landed he's been asked to strip off for sizzling sex scenes.

Gerry has also recently finished a six-month stint in London's West End where he had to snog gorgeous Mummy actress Rachel Weisz every night.

That was after close encounters with Charlotte Rampling, Tara Fitzgerald, Simone Lahbib and Nicola Stapleton.

And last month viewers saw him fumbling on a couch with stunning co-star Sara Stockbridge in the ITV series Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married.

But, unlike other actors who trot out the party line about their reluctance to do bedroom scenes, cheeky Gerry happily admits he loves every horny minute of them.

Gerry, 30, said: "I hate to admit it but I'm really beginning to enjoy doing the old romps because I've done so many now. Of course at first I was really nervous but I've really got into my stride, shall we say.

"The only time I truly had stagefright was in a movie called Little White Lies with Tara Fitzgerald.

"This was because I've always fancied Tara like crazy and suddenly I'm been asked to get into bed with her and act out a sex scene. I was scared in case she realised I wasn't acting.

"In Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married with Sara Stockbridge I'm at it with her on the sofa and the director was like 'cut, cut - Gerry I said CUT.'

"I also get to have a fun time with Charlotte Rampling in The Cherry Orchard, as her horny, roguish manservant.

"Then I got Simone Lahbib and Nicola Stapleton into bed, before they tied me up and did a runner.

"And I recently finished up six months in the West End in Suddenly Last Summer. I play a doctor who is asked to lobotomise Rachel.

"She's a lovely girl and very sexy - and I got to snog her every single night on stage.

"But honestly how can I complain. I mean what other job pays you to kiss and fondle the most beautiful women around."

Gerry was a late starter on the acting scene, treading the boards for the first time just four years ago.

He gave up a promising career as a solicitor just one week before he qualified, but has absolutely no regrets.

And no wonder. He now boasts a list of impressive roles including the award-winning Mrs Brown as Billy Connolly's brother, The Bond flick Tomorrow Never Dies, The Cherry Orchard, Harrison's Flowers with Andie MacDowell, Fast Food with Emily Woof and Shooters with Adrian Dunbar.

And his latest movie One More Kiss, starring fellow Scots Valerie Edmond - another who gets the Butler snog treatment - and James Cosmo, is released today.

His telly work includes Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married, An Unsuitable Job For A Woman with Helen Baxendale and Young Person's Guide To Being A Rock Star.

He said: "I took an honours law degree from Glasgow University and just before I was about to qualify I gave it all up to be an actor. I just thought I really don't want to do this for the rest of my life.

"So I took myself off to London and after meeting the Shakespearian actor Steven Berkoff in a coffee shop I auditioned then was cast by him in Coriolanus.

"That was my lucky break, but I think I have an advantage over other actors because coming into the game at a late stage meant that I have more maturity.

"I got all the madness out my system as a student, when I had some

wild, wild days. But when I got into acting I gave up all the booze to concentrate on my new career.

"I stopped drinking because I was too wild with it and got into stupid situations. I just acted like an idiot with the stuff.

"I haven't touched a drop in years. It's not something you appreciate straight away because it's a whole life change. I just couldn't handle the devastating lows anymore. I was always reaching for new highs and it was doing me in, physically and mentally.


"When I took up acting I just said, 'Enough is enough' and it's done me the world of good.

"After starring with Berkoff I then auditioned for the play of Trainspotting. I was so hyper during my interview that the producer asked me 'Are you on drugs right now?'

"We got into this bizarre argument about whether I was on drugs or not. I don't do drugs at all, it's just that I'm so hyper, but I ended up getting the part anyway."

Mrs Brown with Connolly and Judi Dench followed before a dream role in Bond.

He said: "I only had a tiny part in Tomorrow Never Dies where I got to say one line, 'We're now 14 degrees down by the stern sir' but who cares I was still in a James Bond film and one that many people consider to the best.

"The funny thing is the director Richard Spottiswoode didn't even know what I was saying because of my thick Scottish accent.

"But I will return to Bond one day - and I want to be 007 himself."

Next up Gerry played Marty Claymore - sending up Wet Wet Wet singer Marti Pellow - in Young Person's Guide To Being A Rock Star.

Gerry said: "I met Marti recently because his fiancee Eileen Catterson is actually my cousin.

"He said my mickey take was the funniest thing he'd ever seen, he loved it which was a huge relief."

But he is really excited about his latest role as Sam in the hotly-tipped One More Kiss.

He plays the ex-boyfriend of Valerie Edmond who has returned to the Borders to die from brain cancer.

Making the movie brought back memories of his own dad who died from the disease.

He said: "Like most families I have had experience of cancer through my dad.

"He was virtually paralysed and in pain from his head to his toes, but he was laughing and joking to the end. It was really inspirational to watch.

"The movie was heavy to do but I think it is a fantastic film. I loved doing it."

Gerry is a real tonic in the shallow world of showbiz as a straight forward, no-nonsense guy.

And that worked wonders with difficult American actress Andie MacDowell when the pair were in Prague filming Harrison's Flowers.

Gerry said: "The movie is about a photographer who goes missing in Bosnia. I play another photographer who finds Andie, who has been raped and left for dead by Serb soldiers.

"Andie has a reputation for being difficult, but she wasn't with me.

"She is a bit stand-offish but as soon as I got talking to her and just acted as normal as possible she was brand new and we really hit it off.

"That's the way I always am. I'll talk to anyone no matter who they are."

Now he's heading for Hollywood - hoping to make his big break.

He said: "I'm going to stay in Los Angeles for a few months and just see what happens.

"I've been pretty lucky landing some steamy scenes with beautiful actresses in this country and I wouldn't mind more of the same in the States."

After his blooding in the latest Dracula film Scottish actor Gerard Butler
wants to play Robert Burns, writes Phil Miller

Gerard Butler has Hollywood at his feet, Tinseltown producers hammering on his door and the cream of Los Angeles' talent scouts besieging his mobile phone. As he sits in his new LA apartment, however, he is thinking only of Alloway, the Highlands and Rabbie Burns.

Just three years ago Butler, now 30, was an unhappy trainee solicitor in Edinburgh when he decided to throw inhis law career and move to London to seek his fortune as an actor.

Things happened faster than he might have imagined and suddenly he had been plucked from obscurity to play the lead role in America's Christmas movie blockbuster, Dracula 2000, produced by leading horror director Wes Craven and the makers of Scream.

Already Dracula 2000 sits at No 7 in the US box office top 10, having taken more than $6m in its first weekend.

But as the film opened, Butler's mind was already elsewhere as he began lobbying to star as his hero, Robert Burns, in Clarinda, a biopic produced by Highlander star James Cosmo. Butler, who lives in London as well as LA, is desperate to star as the bard.


Equipped with a real Scottish accent, he thinks he has a chance to snatch the Burns role away from American actors linked to the role, such as Johnny Depp.

For the immediate future, though, Butler will have to be content with completing his next film, the big-budget, special-effects-laden Reign of Fire.

This film, also starring Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale, concerns a war between humans and fire-breathing dragons that have emerged from the earth's core to rule the world.

Butler will play the best friend of hero Bale in the film, which will begin filming in March 2001 on location in Dublin, Wicklow and Northern Ireland. He describes the movie as a bit "bizarre", but it represents another rung up on the ladder.

Some people in Hollywood, including the producer Bob Weinstein, are grooming Butler as the next big Scots actor to tread the path marked out by Ewan McGregor and Dougray Scott. He now hopes this will help put him firmly in the frame to depict Burns.

Vadim Jean, whose films include One More Kiss and Leon the Pig Farmer, will direct Clarinda and has spoken to Butler about the part.

The actor says: "Vadim is a good friend of mine, we have talked about it and he knows I would kill for the chance to play Burns. I would absolutely love to but how can I compete against Johnny Depp? The only advantage I have over him is that I am Scottish."

Butler says he is inspired by the poet because he believes their love lives are similar.

The film, to be made by Alloway Films, is based on the love letters exchanged between Burns and Agnes McElhose, who was known as Clarinda. Butler says he had a similar lengthy postal love affair with a "French woman" and adds: "There's a few similarities between us - I'm much better at long-distance relationships than those more close-up."

A source close to the Burns film said that Alloway Films were still hoping Depp, seen recently in Sleepy Hollow, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and The Ninth Gate, would be able to play the part. "If they cannot get Depp, they will have to cast the net wider and I'm sure Butler would be a possibility," the source added.

Cosmo is a friend of Butler's, having worked with him on the set of One More Kiss, and chuckled at his ambition.

He said that his ideal Burns had not yet been cast, and added: "Nothing is set in stone at the moment, it's all up for grabs - there are quite a few famous names in the frame, but nothing has been decided at all. Gerry is a nice boy, and of course we could consider him for the part of Burns."

Butler was spotted for the role of Dracula after taking the lead role in an American television series about Attila the Hun. Dimension Films spent some time trying to find the ideal actor for the part and producers constantly came back to Butler, after his impressive work on Attila.

Butler, filming in the Baltic, also kept reminding them of his presence with regular calls from his mobile phone. Then, after nearly four months of waiting, he won his first major role.

Since he gave up law, he also has starred as Archie Brown, John Brown's brother, in Mrs Brown and had small parts in Tomorrow Never Dies and One More Kiss.


The plot of Dracula 2000 is as grittily realistic and thoughtful as any modern horror film - that is, not at all.

In this version, the vampire has accidentally been reawakened after a hundred years in captivity and finds himself in modern New Orleans. Dracula's traditional foe, Van Helsing, played by Christopher Plummer, returns to hunt him down, aided by a young apprentice, played by Jonny Lee Miller.

Butler considers Dracula 2000, directed by Craven's prot?g? Patrick Lussie, as more of an action movie than a traditional horror film, and is looking forward to its British release in March.

His sudden success has led to the actor adopting a reflective attitude towards the vagaries of fame. "It's been playing on my mind," he admits. I think a lot of it [getting the Dracula part] was perseverance - and when I went to audition for the role, I was doing Attila and I was so pumped full of adrenalin, I was a bit nuts.

"It took three and a half months for them to pick me, but it's been a huge job for me to get."

Whatever his reservations, his success means the lifestyle of this garrulous and friendly man is a long way from the dreary legal offices of Edinburgh.

"I disliked working as a lawyer; it was a time of real soul-searching for me. I was wondering whether it was really my calling," Butler says. "Since then my life has been unbelievable, and here I am sitting in Los Angeles - but I don't take it for granted."

And as for being the next Scottish superstar? Butler laughs.

"I think the Scots are a good bunch of people, personally, they seem to have an energy that makes them do well in all areas of life. I think we can be personable and fun, and that comes out in our acting - I try to be as appealing as possible."

He's keeping his fingers crossed that this very appeal will land him the role he most covets.

HE STOPPED DRINKING WHEN IT GOT OUT OF HAND, SO PLAYING AN ALCOHOLIC IN THE JURY RECALLED BAD TIMES FOR GERARD BUTLER

Jury star Gerard Butler knows exactly how long it has been since he last had a drink. "I'm not counting, but it's been four years, three days and six hours," says the hunky Scots star. "I was a bit of a lad in my late teens and twenties. Basically, I drank a lot."

It meant that landing the part of juror Johnnie Donne, a recovering alcoholic who suffers torment and humiliation as he tries to shake off his addiction, brought back painful personal memories. Gerard was 28 when he realised his drinking was out of control and decided to give it up for good.

"I had a year in America and ended up getting drunk for a month solid with a bunch of Irish guys I met there," recalls Gerard, now 32, who had Hollywood success in Dracula 2000. "I was still drinking when I got back to Edinburgh. In fact, I turned up for an interview baked in every way, and still got the job! It was about then that I realised it was getting out of hand and I knew I had to do something about it. I didn't go into rehab, but I dealt with it in my own way.

"It was hard, but I did it and I don't drink now - it's not part of my life any more. It's funny, but some of the most miserable periods in my life were when I was drinking heavily and people thought I was happy. Now I'm happier, but I don't have to show it. I'm a lot more comfortable with myself.

"Reading the script for The Jury gave me the creeps because of what I went through. The part of Johnnie grabbed me and terrified me at the same time. It brought a lot of stuff back that I'd forgotten and that scared me, but it also convinced me to do it.

"It made me feel as if I was living through all the misery again. Johnnie has just got out of rehab and has nothing - before he was assertive and smart, now he's lost it and is struggling. Johnnie has to build everything up from scratch because he's lost all his friends - those he does have were drinking buddies who he can't see now. It wasn't that awful for me, but it was pretty bad and you never forget that scared feeling."

Glasgow-born Gerard could just as easily have played one of the barristers in ITV1's gripping Sunday night drama series as he is a law graduate.

"I studied for five years then trained as a lawyer for three years in Edinburgh," he says. "I enjoyed the studying, but the training was the most miserable experience I've ever had. A lot of that had to do with working in civil law. It isn't as interesting as criminal, which is where most of my university friends ended up.

"After I'd got into acting I'd often dream that I was still a lawyer and wake up depressed. It just wasn't for me. I've been in court and it really isn't that interesting. It's not the kind of life I wanted to live."

Gerard's acting career got off to a painful start when he was poked in the eye with a wooden stake during theatre rehearsals for Coriolanus. Later, while making his film debut in 1997's Oscar-nominated Mrs Brown, he ended up with hypothermia after spending hours bound naked in the freezing sea. Luckily, those mishaps haven't put him off.

Parts in Fast Food, One More Kiss and The Cherry Orchard boosted his CV. Then landing the lead in Dracula 2000 brought him to the attention of Hollywood. His other film credits include Harrison's Flowers, Shooters and the forthcoming Timeline. Meanwhile, telly addicts will recognise him from Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married, A Young Person's Guide To Becoming A Rock Star and An Unsuitable Job For A Woman.

Being so much in demand, it's no wonder that the handsome star is currently single - he has barely any time to himself, let alone for anyone else. He has spent the past few months criss-crossing the Irish Sea while filming the fantasy adventure Reign Of Fire in Ireland as well as The Jury in London.

"Once I filmed all day in London and flew to Dublin to work all night - 24 hours in total," he says with a grin. "So, yes, I got pretty run down and started smoking again. But I'd rather be busy than not."

It wasn't all doom and gloom playing Johnnie in The Jury. At least his character got to have a fling with fellow juror Rose (Helen McCrory). But this week when he realises Rose is married, it sends Johnnie back into the pub. The part also made Gerard aware of how complex the legal system can appear.

"If you are a barrister or QC you deal with trials and court procedures on a daily basis," he says. "But it can be different for a juror, who has no experience of the law, when they're responsible for somebody's destiny as in a high-profile murder trial.

"It was tough just doing it as an actor - we were in the courtroom for a month solid weighing up the evidence. I hadn't realised how powerful and disturbing it can be for jurors. It can affect people's lives in a long-lasting way, even after the trial is over.

"Johnnie is thrown into this highly pressurised environment and, like a lot of his fellow jurors, he's not really capable of dealing with it. It was a difficult part for me, but it was something I had to do - even if it did bring back some terrible memories."

Да и "подсунула" Мэри не кого-то "левого", а своего братишку. Будь он кАкушкой, не стала бы она такую подлость Лиззи делать. И брату тоже не стала бы. У Батлера такое занятное лицо было, когда он деньги брал, что ясно сразу: деньги эти ему нафиг не нужны, но если бы он про них не вспомнил, то Лиззи его уволила бы. Все шло так, как должно было идти. И если с самого начала ему было плевать на эту семью, то он не пришел бы на первую встречу с книгой. Это уже не безразличие. Так что верится, что усе у них там замечательно будет. У Лиззи хватило ума не оттолкнуть такой подарочек по привычке. :D

Ну вот нет. Ну - нет. Про деньги он спросил действительно со странным выражением лица. Причем я бы сказала - если судить именно по данному конкретному выражению лица - что деньги эти ему нужны. Но. Поскольку он их вернул и вообще таким образом зарабатывать не мужское дело, а Незнакомец у нас ведет себя по-мужски в самом лучшем смысле, я склонна считать, что здесь он сыграл.
Книжку принес - добросовестно выполняет условия контракта. :-))) В то же самое время он действительно чуткий человек и наделенный воображением - наверное, думал про мальчишку, гадал, какой же подарок его обрадует и нашел. Но вот когда они с Фрэнки идут к морю, каждый сам по себе. Фрэнки бросает камешки, Незнакомец сидит и думает о чем-то своем. Потом как будто встряхнувшись идет к Фрэнки и учит его правильно "пускать блинчики".
Мне кажется, что в фильме замечательно показано, как незнакомец привязывается к мальчишке, как ребенок становится ему небезразличен. А сначала он был чужой человек, который растерялся, когда мальчик его обнял.
Если все шоколадно с самого начала, о чем было фильм-то снимать?

Нет, конечно, не важна. :-))) Более того, я уверена, что "вычислить" эту профессию мы не сможем. Я, например, совершенно не представляю, как выглядят там люди конкретных профессий, да в сущности и вообще социальную инфраструктуру Шотландии я очень туманно представляю.
Но ведь и обитательницы Дж.Б.нет не могут с уверенностью сказать, кто же такой Незнакомец.
Он показан именно таким - человек без имени, без прошлого и будущего ("без будущего" - повод задуматься над возможностью будущего с Лиззи).

Помнится, один молодой человек на форуме Экслера горячо доказывал, что Незнакомец только что вышел из тюрьмы :-)))))))))))))) Личный опыт что ли сказался? Бред в общем.

Я бы не сказала, что у Незнакомца и в личной жизни были какие-то потрясения. Помнишь, я приводила пример "мужской т.зр.", автор ее считает, что Незнакомца бросила любимая женщина.
Не знаю. Не вижу я никаких трагедий в нем. В Лиззи - да. А он с первой минуты на экране очень уверенный в себе и вполне благополучный человек.
Загадка.

Нора , я с тобой согласна в том, что незнакомец не сразу проявил свои лучшие качества, но ен вызывает сомнений, что он не может быть равнодушным к Френки. Стоит только вспомнить лицо Незнакомца, когда Лиззи говорит, что глухота Френки - это подарок его отца! Но лице незнакомца появляется такая буря эмоций. Еили бы отец Френки оказался по близости, Незнакомец его разорвал бы.
Здесь можно сделать 2 вывода:
1. Джерри прекрасно справился со своей ролью, может даже лучше. чем этого ожидали. Он сам говорил, что руководствовался своим личным опытом. А переживать что-то что заставило тебя страдать когда-то всегда очень больно!!!
2. Только очень хороший фильм может вызвать такую бурную дискуссию!!!

Угу, а если б было всё шоколадно в конце, то тут бы не исписывали десятки страниц размышлениями о дальнейшей судьбе героев. :-)

Абсолютно верно! Эйфория от встречи прошла, каждый погрузился в свое... абсолютно жизненно. Этим фильм и цепляет.

Угу, меня здесь еще не было... Да я никаких претензий не имею, если ты подумала. на что жаловаться-то? ;) Пусть Батлеров будет мноооого... очень много, я только "за"! Девчонки свое делают, а у нас тут свое подобралось. Никто же не претендовал на официальный сайт, я предложила упорядочить переводы... ну что получилось, то получилось. Просто если б раньше я знала, что всяких неприятностей можно было избежать.

Достучалась наконец до того сайта ;) Вот сразу видно, когда за дело берется настоящий веб-дизайнер. Честно говоря, тоже хотелось сделать что-то инфернальное такое, но, как Воробушек сказала, это было би слишком предсказуемо. Хотя странно: у них в теге ключевых слов написаны какие угодно слова на тему программирования, софта и экстрима, но нет никаких производных от "Джерри Батлер". Но в любом случае с этот сайт перекроет наш во много раз, плюс когда еще восстановимся после "народной" пакости. Поэтому предлагаю наш сайт закрыть.

Воробушек, мне не стыдно, с чего ты взяла? Стыдно будет, если я с горя начну порнографические рассказы про Джерри писать. :D Ну просто у них все грамотнее сделано, так что очевидно, что лучше иметь один хороший сайт, чем 10 с разным наполнением, которые дополняют друг друга... ну или типа того...

Мое настроение на сей момент, отсюда и все вытекающие... Если бы подлый народ не сделал свою подлянку... еще бы ладно... а сейчас наш сайт просто инвалидом выглядит, а я не могу ему пока помочь... вот и пришла в голову мысль добить калеку. Что толку от обилия материалов, если они все у меня только в локальном пользовании?
П.С. На самом деле мой депресс исходит от того, что человек, мнению которого я доверяла, и по великой глупости дала почитать свою книгу (на вычитку), взял и ляпнул, что я придумала себе какой-то там мир, сама в него ушла и подругу этой же гадостью сбиваю с толку, забиваю ей голову бреднями... что не есть правда, но очень обидно... так что на объективность моего мнения не рассчитывайте. Это ваши переводы, присланные вами фотки и файлы, плюс моя компоновка...
