Jackman steals the show Tony Awards broadcast produces memorable gay moments, as host Hugh Jackman wins for Peter Allen role By MIKE FLEMING Friday, June 11, 2004 IT IS NO surprise that the 58th annual Tony Awards, telecast from Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, was chock full of gay moments, gay winners — and gay losers. After all, the ceremony is mostly about musical theater, and everyone knows that Broadway is a haven for those fabulously entertaining homosexuals. “It’s not TV; it’s the Tony Awards,” cooed host Hugh Jackman in a recap of events about halfway through the show. Jackman was part of some of the telecast’s gayest moments. He brought down the house with his over-the-top performance of “Not the Boy Next Door” from “The Boy from Oz,” in which he plays gay songwriter Peter Allen. Jackman later claimed the award for Best Lead Actor in a Musical over gay actor John Tartaglia in “Avenue Q” and Euan Morton’s portrayal of Boy George in “Taboo.” During his number from “Oz,” Jackman wore a leopard-print shirt and belt with gold lame pants, joking that Radio City featured one of the “biggest organs in the world.” “What more could a boy ask for?” he quipped. Later in the number, he coaxed actress Sarah Jessica Parker onstage for an impromptu dirty dancing lesson. When Parker returned to the stage as a presenter with gay actor Nathan Lane, she ribbed Lane about the dance with Jackman. “Jealous?” she asked. “He just won’t return my calls,” Lane answered. Jackman’s good looks were the butt of other gay jibes. Gay puppet Rod from Best Musical winner “Avenue Q” hit on Jackman during one bit and even stole a kiss. Jackman reacted with a comment to his wife in the audience. “Deb, if I go to the ‘Avenue Q’ party, you’ll know why,” he said. The big winners of the night were the transgender-themed show “I Am My Own Wife,” which won Best Play, and “Avenue Q” for Best Musical. “Wife,” which also took home the Pulitzer Prize for Drama early this year, also garnered the hard-won Best Lead Actor in a Play award for Jefferson Mays as a real-life crossdresser. Gay director Moises Kaufman was the only nominee for “Wife” that didn’t win. That award went to Jack O’Brien for “Henry IV.” When accepting the Best Play award for “Wife,” gay writer Doug Wright gave “all my love to Clem,” and the producer took the opportunity to say that the play’s off-center character is poignant in a time when some U.S. citizens are “denied the ultimate right to marry.” “Avenue Q” also won Best Original Score for debut writers Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, as well as Best Book of a Musical for Jeff Whitty. Marx thanked “my parents and my boyfriend.” Whitty also followed recognition of his parents with “Steve, I love you. You’re the other best thing to happen to me this year.” Lopez and Marx beat out Boy George for “Taboo” and gay playwright Tony Kushner’s “Caroline, or Change” for their prize. Best Revival of a Musical went to gay songwriter Stephen Sondheim’s “Assassins.” In that show, gay actor Dennis O’Hare lost Best Featured Actor in a Musical to his cast mate, Michael Cerveris, who also beat out Raul Esparza for “Taboo.” Best Direction of a Musical also went to Sondheim’s “Assassins.” Joe Manello beat out gay directors George C. Wolfe and Jason Moore for the trophy. “Wicked,” a musical prequel to “The Wizard of Oz,” was favored in several of the top categories. But the only major prize the show took home went to Idina Menzel for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. |

2 Tony????? |
