My main complaint is the lack of romantic passion. I found it hard to believe that these two kids, Romeo and Juliet, were fascinated and enraptured by each other. Juliet, played by Lorna Want, seems like a petulant young girl who is determined to disobey her family’s wishes. Her marriage to Romeo becomes a mere act of rebellion against her parents rather than the actions of a lovesick child. A love scene, with Romeo and Juliet sharing a few intimate moments, holding hands, staring into each others eyes, discovering the joys of first love is woefully missing, and makes the final scene look senseless.

The stage design by David Roger works well. The two families each stand on scaffolding platforms, which are pushed around the stage by the cast. They create a sense of embattlement between the families of Capulet and Montaque, as they defend their honour, their flimsy castles in the sky. The use of scaffolding also provides a foreboding omen for the tragedy to follow.

The costumes are a strange mixture of traditional and modern. Romeo is always dressed in motorbike leathers whilst Juliet wears more traditional 16th century clothing. Why?

The costumes used for the mask ball are exquisite and the choreography superb. This is the most aesthetically pleasing act of the show. The remaining choreography is mediocre and at times annoying. I lost count of the number of times members of the ensemble slid on their knees across the stage.

Andrew Bevis (Romeo) has a wonderful voice and can sing a gentle love ballad or an angry explosive song with ease. Jane McDonald (Nurse) and Sevan Stephen (Friar Lawrence) both sing well and easily stand out above the remainder of the ensemble, who all perform adequately. The one exception is Lorna Watt who at the tender age of 15 lacks the experience to bring the full range of emotions to her voice that is needed for the part of Juliet. She at times practically shouts the songs, which is a pity as she has an exceptional voice for such a young actress.

This is not a great musical and certainly does not compare with great classics such as ‘Les Miserables’. However, it is a show you may enjoy, but not one you will fall in love with.

Apparently, during the first run-through of this new
musical, everyone was in tears by the final scene. One readily understands why.
It cannot be easy to watch millions of pounds and months of hard labour going down the pan.
"How long does it last?" a colleague asked someone closely connected with the show as she made her way into the theatre. "Until the end of the week if it's lucky," he replied.
As the Prince of Verona takes to the stage at the start, he warns the audience, in song: "If you think you've seen it all then you'd better think again. . .you're still not prepared for this."
He exaggerates, of course. Those of us who have sat through Bernadette, The Fields of Ambrosia, Which Witch and Napoleon, are quite capable of taking this dire travesty of Shakespeare's matchless love story in our stride.
Yes, it's witless, banal, clumsily staged, abysmally written and often buttock-clenchingly embarrassing, but hey, we veteran first-nighters aren't wimps. Roll on more tosh, we gaily cry and let's have another bucketful of thick schmaltz while you're about it.
Nevertheless, one can't help wondering what was going on in what passes for the minds of the show's producers. Romeo and Juliet has already given birth to one undisputed musical masterpiece, West Side Story. Did they really think this flatulent conception, with a dire Europop score by the French composer Gerard Presgurvic (no, I'd never heard of him either) and lyrics by our own Don Black (who ought to be hanging his head in shame) could stand comparison with Bernstein, Sondheim and Robbins's brilliant transposition of the story to 1950s New York? If they did, one can only conclude that the men in white coats will be coming to take them away pretty sharpish.
In David Freeman's production, Shakespeare's enamelled poetry has been stripped away to leave only the bare bones of the plot, with dreadful dialogue giving way to the kind of songs for which overblown kitsch seems a charitable description.
The costumes mix up the Renaissance, the Victorian and street-modern in a manner I suspect we are meant to call eclectic, and the sets consist of little more than a few climbing frames and blown-up prints of Renaissance paintings including a day-glo version of Botticelli's Birth of Venus.
Meanwhile the choreography by someone rejoicing in the single name Radha, looks as if it has been inspired by a 1971 edition of Top of the Pops, while his niminy-piminy fight scenes pack a far less impressive punch than John Prescott.
It's Black's lyrics that leave your jaw scraping the floor, though. "Forbidden love comes at a price / But it is worth the sacrifice," the young lovers chorus unconvincingly, but it is the nurse who has to plumb the depths of Black's bathos.
"Now she's in love and everything has changed," she trills, re Juliet. "Her feelings and her hair have all been rearranged."
It seems unforgivably cruel to land the 15-year-old Lorna Want with such a dire West End debut.

She's sweet and pretty and if her voice is sometimes uncomfortably strident, she nevertheless deserves better than this.

Andrew Bevis plays Romeo like a floppy-haired pretty boy from a particularly duff boy-band, while Jane McDonald's charmless, charisma-free performance as the nurse robs the role of the faintest hint of earthy humour.

To give the last word to Shakespeare, not a line of whose poetry survives in this lamentable tragedy of a show: "Never was a musical of more woe, than this of Juliet and her Romeo."

В общем жаль, что опять новых Миз не сложилось. Но, по правде говоря на таком музыкальном материале сложно что-то было сделать. Я так интересовалась лондонской премьерой в надежде на новые аранжировки от lesMis овцев (я правильно поняла, что аранжировщик тот же?, см мой пост в топики про РиДж). но раз все так единогласно утверждают о ПОЛНОМ провале - значит не судьба

Ну не надо... Если "Ромео" не нравится лично тебе, это еще не значит, что мюзикл плохой. Во Франции он пользовался большим успехом, если он провалился в Лондоне, то уж точно не из-за музыки. :confused: Хочу послушать английскую версию... :rolleyes: Интересно, как можно было умудрится так испортить Ромео и Джульетту. :confused:

Напишите, плз, о впечатлениях! Судя по рецензиям - полный disaster. Но и на НДДП критики оторвались по полной.
Не думаю, что англичане что-то испортили. Ведь все совпадает с тем, что и во Франции признавали - тинэйджерская музыка, попсовая, написанная для поправки мат. положения. Но там как-то общий тон спокойнее - если кому-то нравится, значит пускай существует. С чем я и согласна (я далеко не поклонница РиДж, но честно с ним ознакомилась)).
К тому же не забывайте, существует и Вестсайдская история. После нее воспринимать что-то на ту же тему сложно более чем. не случайно в каждой из найденных мной ссылок сей проверенный временем мюзикл поминается не раз.

Ну... во Франции мюзикл был очень популярным... среди молодежи, конечно. ;) А насчет НДДП, я с критиками согласна. :D и все же, пока сама не услышу английскую версию "Ромео", буду валить на англичан. :D

Enehi! Я и имела в виду, что в критических статьях (были и такие:) ) так и писалось - у мюзикла свои недостатки (см. пост выше), но он для молодежи и если она его слушает, значит все замечательно. Мол, для кого рассчитано, те и слушают. Так же как мало, кто из 60-летних слушает Раммштейна, но это не повод для Р-на пойти и утопиться в коллективном пруду. Jedem das Seine:)
Меня просто удивляет такая хамоватая манера письма даже в приличных изданиях. Мне казалось, что наши критики отрываются по полной, но по срвнению с англичанами - наши просто ангелы. Думала, что самое большее, на что критики способны это на "Это было неплохо, но все же плохо" ((С)бессмертная Больщая прогулка). А тут "полный отстой", причем почти что в такой же лексике.

Несколько отзывов "простых смертных", для которых это все и делалось. ;)

I'm from Montreal ,Canada. I saw the french version of this show in august 2002 , hope that I'll we be better then the show I saw, nice sets , some good singer , but no orchestra ...and that's a important missing part for a good musical.

Thank you for the great time! Definatly by far the best west end show i have ever seen, it made me love the theatre even more! The cast were great and I am definatly coming back to see it again sometime soon!

What a terrific show, full of action, drama, wonderful 'hummable' music with great harmonies. Every song was a blockbuster. Les Mis eat your heart out!!!

На самом деле - великая штука естетственный отбор (пусть он и не существует на самом деле). На спектакль идет тот, кто любит этот жанр. Пост ооставляет тот, кого распирает от восторга. Другой просто не будет заморачиваться.
А бедному критику хочешь-не хочешь идти надо. Вот он и печален. Одно и то же ведь можно по разному сказать. "А почему это Р. в кожаных штанах, Дж в костюме 16 века.!!!Ужасно!". А можно - "Как замечательно продуманы костюмы Монтекки и Капулетти!". И обо высказывающихся будут говорить об одном и том же. Вечный парадокс...
Ближе к теме топика - я буду очень благодарна за ссылки на англ. mp3.

А моей благодарности просто предела не будет! :D ;)

ЗЫ: Мне очень нравятся женские костюмы в РиДж... С такими рукавами до пола. :) Интересно, в английской версии они такие же... :rolleyes:
