The 210th anniversary of the birth of the Russian national poet, Alexander Pushkin will be marked by the world premiere in the English language of his verse drama Little Tragedies at Mikhail Baryshnikov’s Baryshnikov Arts Theatre in New York. Distinguished Artist of Russia Alexandre Marine of the Moscow Arts Theatre will direct a verse translation by the noted American poet and Pushkin scholar Julian Henry Lowenfeld. According to Stanford Makishi, Executive Director of the Barysnikov Arts Center, “For nearly two centuries, the genius of Alexander Pushkin has been the fountainhead of the soulful Russian culture. We are proud to host the world premiere in the English language of Pushkin's dramatic masterpiece The Little Tragedies at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York from November 2 to 16, 2009."
“All of us who love Pushkin have a special responsibility to help spread his work around the world--he is truly one of Russia's greatest ambassadors and is indisputably the most colorful and romantic figure in Russian literary history," said John Mroz, head of the East West-Institute of New York, Moscow, and Brussels, one of the information sponsors of the event. The production is supported by the American Association for the Advancement of Russian Culture (ARCCF), under the direction of former Congressman James Symington. ARCCF’s other projects include the erection of a monument to Pushkin in Washington unveiled by Russian Foreign Minister Ivanov as well as a monument in Moscow to the great American poet Walt Whitman, a historical exhibition entitled The Liberator and the Emancipator: Tsar Alexander II and President Abraham Lincoln, and at the Kennedy Center of Evgeny Kissin, Roberta Peters, Ignat Solzhenitsyn, the Russian Army Ensemble, and others.
