CHAPTER I
+ Raskolnikov steps out of his room and silently moves down the stairs. He stops a few steps short of a door on the lower floor.
Raskolnikov:
It’s there again, that open door
Lying like a chasm across the floor
Each time I walk I feel afraid
Afraid of debts that must be paid
For that small coffin called a “room”
Complete with dinner and a maid
Move like a cat - that would be best
If I were to disturb her rest
The damn old hag would start inquiring
Demanding, threatening and crying
And I’d be dodging like a fool
And I’d be cowering and lying
+ R. silently moves across the doorway and out of the building. There he catches his breath and suddenly curses.
Raskolnikov:
How can I fear trifles of that kind
When grander things I have to keep in mind?
Yes… man whose hands all things enclose
Will let them slip when fear draws close
To take a step, to say a word
What in the world do men fear most?
I ramble much and nothing seems to matter
I’m idle, and have lots of time to chatter
Why am I going there today?
What kind of scene will I survey?
This is just, nonsense, just a game
Yes this is just a game I play!
