ROMEO &JULIET is a new musical which will be premiered in London's West End at the Piccadilly Theatre this autumn. The musical will open on Monday 4 November, following reduced price previews from Tuesday 15 October. The young cast will be joined by television and recording star Jane McDonald as 'The Nurse'.
The Montague's and the Capulets, Verona's famous feuding families, are brought stunningly to life in this youthful and energetic new show. Over 20 original songs and dazzling modern choreography makes this an extraordinary new version of the star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet.
The music is written by the multi-platinum album selling composer Gerard Presgurvic with lyrics by Don Black, whose awards include an Oscar, two Tonys and five Ivor Novello Awards. His work includes the musicals "Billy", "Aspects of Love", "Sunset Boulevard" and "Bombay Dreams", and five James Bond songs including "Diamonds Are Forever".
ROMEO & JULIET will be directed by David Freeman and designed by David Roger, who have been responsible for the hugely successful series of popular operas staged at the Royal Albert Hall, including "Madame Butterfly", "Carmen" and "Aida". The musical arrangements will be by John Cameron, who was responsible for "Les Misйrables".
Unlike "West Side Story", ROMEO & JULIET will largely stay faithful to Shakespeare's play. Although the dialogue will be updated and contemporary music added, the story and characters, as well as the Verona setting, will remain.
