"A strike by the union representing theater musicians has shut down all but one Broadway musical for the weekend, after actors and stagehands refused to cross the picket lines Friday.

Actors Equity has directed its members – 650 actors and stagehands – to honor the musicians strike. That means they will not cross picket lines, and that 17 Broadway musicals will be dark for the entire weekend.

Musicians from Local 802, who are in a contract dispute with Broadway producers, walked off the job at midnight Thursday.

The musicians’ contract expired Sunday night, but the union extended a strike deadline by four days after some progress in negotiations. The sticking point continues to be the long-standing minimum number of musicians that producers must hire at each theater.

After initially wanting to end mandatory hiring altogether, the producers offered to retain a minimum of seven musicians at the biggest theaters – down from the current 26. In addition, a grandfather clause would protect the jobs of all current union members.

But musicians, fearful that producers intend to eventually replace them with recorded or computer generated music, are insisting on more.

The musical “Cabaret” has a special contract that allows it to stay open. Ticket holders for all other Broadway musicals can get a refund or exchange at the box office.

Broadway musicians last went on strike in September 1975, shutting down nine musicals for 25 days."
