I rented this, thinking that it would be at least halfway decent. Wrong! This movie rips off Andrew Lloyd Webber so bad that I'm surprised he (or his company) didn't sue them. It was written in 1990, two years after the Broadway premiere. It seems the writers were playing to an audience who hadn't gotten those elusive Bway tickets yet. The similarities are many, and not just because they used the same source material, either. Firstly, the Phantom wears a half mask. It's painted silver, but the half-mask design was manufactured exclusively for ALW's Phantom. Second, "Angel of Music" is replaced by "Spirit of Music". Come on! "Music of the Night" is directly copied in "Perfect Music". The staging is slightly different, but the intent to bewitch Christine is still there. The "Notes" song, done by the opera managers, is a half-hearted attempt here. This musical's equivalent of "All I Ask Of You" takes place on the roof of the Opera House--sound familiar? There is a mysterious woman (a la Madame Giry) who knows of the Phantom. The only differences this one has is that there IS the Persian "Daroga", NO falling chandelier (obviously no budget for that one) and no boat scene.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
