Кто-нибудь когда-нибудь слышал, что Райса с Уэббером на написание будущей нетленки вдохновили стихи Боба Дилана:
In a many dark hour
I've been thinkin' about this
That Jesus Christ
Was betrayed by a kiss
But I can't think for you
You'll have to decide
Whether Judas Iscariot
Had God on his side
Has anyone else seen good productions (or bad also, i suppose) of JCS where they switch up the genders? I've seen a marvelous one where they had a female Judas, Pilate, and Priests...and they were all really good. It added a neat dimenson, I though, especially with Judas as a girl, since women are always the cause of societies problems in the first place PS: I can say that because I am female

Another production had women preists, that was not bothersome at all. A female Annas would work well, also.
Luke Joined: 22 Apr 2002 Posts: 520 Location: Brisvegas, Australia We had a female Annas, Peter and Herod, as well as a couple of the priests. It worked well. I personally think Annas sounds better sung by females. And Peter is fine as well. I would never change Caiaphas or Pilate though.

Originally they wanted a female Judas but when that concept kinda died in the arse, they went for a female Annas, Priest 3 and 4 of the 12 Apostles! It worked but they also tried to change the concept of the show, bring it up to date. turn Jesus into a rock star, it kinda worked, but if u love JCS in its traditional form as i do, it was kinda ruined! BTW, i was originally cast as Peter, but pulled out cause i got cast in a production of Can-Can closer to where i live, and with a MUCH better theatre company!

But, this is just my opinion. I don't think that's necessarily the case. I do think that random gender swapping would be detrimental. However, I do feel that if the director has a concept that serves the material and if that concept includes gender swapping, then it's fine. After all, what is the message of a play? And should plays be performed to send a message at all? And who sends the message? I think that it's much more interesting to play characters and situations than a message. Playing a message is like playing comedy: it's self aware - comedy arises out of situation and character, not out of playing the joke. As for who sends the message: well, the writing is there but when you put that text into performance, things like the director's concept come into play. And I hope to see many different concepts take many different forms - each new staging of the text deserves to be handled in it's own territory. New stagings demand fresh thinking.

I mean, if you think about it, which I constantly was while watching, you see that Judas as a girl just doesn't work at all and changes a lot of feeling and character of the show that wasn't intended. Such as, it could be interpreted that the reason Judas is doing this to Jesus is because Judas is jealous of Jesus' and Mary's relationship, because maybe Judas loves Jesus. Afterall, right before Judas dies, he/she sings a reprise of "I Don't Know How To Love Him". And Judas interrupts Mary's soothing of Jesus' in "Everthing's Alright" and in "What's the Buzz?". If this was just a normal strory and didn't originally have anything, I am sure that is what the interpretation would be. She goes through the "I am jealous and this is what's best" (act one) stage and then the "I regret what I've done so just leave me alone now that I can't have you" (Judas' Death) stage and then the "I don't really need you, now I'm cocky" (Superstar) stage. It all fits. But as I said and whole reason of this post, it changes everything as you see. And I don't think that is right to do.
/ну здесь я согласна, может, это и прикольно, но действительно все меняет. По крайней мере, серьезная полноценная версия уже точняк не выходит/

This girl was amazing! she could hit all the low notes, and i personally thought it was way stronger that it was a woman because woman are a lot better at bringing across the compassion. and i've seen this live and i've seen both movies and i don't think either of the pilates do this. It makes the counting scene a hella emotional and wonderful! BTW, this girl had just finished her sophomore year in high school. .
Apollo Joined: 12 May 2003 Posts: 26 Location: Birmingham, UK We just finished a production of JCS where Simon, Annas and two of the other priests were women. Annas' character works really well if she's played like a Lady Macbeth style vamp and Simon kicks ass as an energetic Lara Croft-esque disciple. I was one of the random disciples in the background. But it was awesome. - really emotional...

Whether that's a good or bad thing we must all decide for ourselves. But I don't think it would ruin its message. Can't a woman portray fear and sacrifice just as well as a man?
