And in a city where press interest in a production often evaporates after opening night, "Woman" has deliberately been holding back its trump card, Crawford, who was conspicuously absent from the pre-opening round of interviews.

THE RODENT IN WHITE.

The Evening Standard

Her singing voice is not the strongest, she cannot dance and her looks wouldn't win her a spot on a London Fashion Week catwalk. Nevertheless, Missy is the West End's brightest new starlet.

She does, after all, hold her own opposite Michael Crawford in Lord Lloyd-Webber's multi-million pound new show - impressive work, considering Missy is making her acting debut in The Woman In White.

Particularly impressive, however, when one considers that Missy is less than a year old - and a rat.

Today the Evening Standard can reveal details of the training regime that has transformed Missy into what Crawford describes as 'a great talent'.

Missy's mentor Cindy Newman is the Simon Fuller of the animal kingdom. Her company Animals Galore has trained many animals to act on stage and screen including the cat that gave such a stirring performance in Alien. Missy was discovered by Ms Newman in April, languishing behind bars.

She said: 'I did the rounds of all the pet shops - it is a matter of seeing how confident they are.

'Missy from the start was always fairly confident and wanting to be with you, to be handled.' Her crucial scene comes in the second act, when Crawford, as Count Fosco, is singing You Can Get Away With Anything.

Animal-loving Fosco takes Missy from her cage, holds up both arms and she scampers from one hand to the other, pauses for a moment to milk the audience, then runs back.

It may appear a simple turn, but it took time for Missy to master. Eventually, after months of work, Missy cracked it - now she is so addicted to the limelight her frustrated understudies Badger and Biscuit have not had a sniff of the stage.

'Missy really enjoys it. If we felt she was getting fed up with it we'd give her a break. But as soon as she hears you coming before a show she bashes at the top of the cage - she can't wait to get out there.'

Missy and the cast have bonded well. Ms Newman said: 'When I first took her into the rehearsal rooms people were cringing from her and going 'Ooh - look at her tail'. Now all the actors and everybody else are saying 'Can I have a hold?'.'

The show also features - in a lesser role - a mouse. Two mice actors are used for this role: Sugar and Spice. They and Missy are looked after by handlers, including Jessica Sharville.

Ms Newman concedes that not all performances will be faultless. She said: 'They are animals and you can't be totally sure they will perform as trained - but that's the fun of the theatre.'
