My mom bought me the CATS video awhile back, but I just recently watched it. What a BOMB! I was expecting to be a bit disappointed. Yet, I managed to be disgusted by the display of sheer tastelessness that I saw.
Now, I'm not a Baby Kitten here. I HAVE seen this play on stage before. I saw it in '87, '88, and '89, if I can remember correctly. I NEVER saw such a tasteless production of CATS as I saw a few days ago on my T. V. screen.
What was so tasteless, you might ask? Well, let me tell you. There's usually a bit of sex appeal in this show, but whoever made the CATS video sexed the production up so much that even a stripper couldn't call it family entertainment!
At the beginning of the video, an ad for CATS is shown; tons of kids in catlike face paint are shown, and many parents rave about the family appeal of the production.
Then, during CATS, the Rum Tum Tugger does his big number, and mimics pornography to a tee! Those female cats nearly touched his...well, you know what I mean, with their noses a dozen times or more during his big number. He had a really great hair do. Yet, his Elvis-esque dancing was anything but child appropriate, and it was very tacky; it reeked of blatent, unadulterated sex appeal. This isn't theatre; it's pornography!
This sort of disgusting behavior continues throughout the show. I must admit that it provided a great contrast to the seriousness of Grizabella's dillemma. Yet, it also served to trivialize CATS as a theatrical production.
If theatre only = sex, then why are costumes being made?
I may sound harsh about this entire issue, but I feel that the video of CATS was awful! I am not a religious fanatic, but I do believe that a movie that's not really appropriate for kids ought to be advertised as being a wonderful, family movie. I wouldn't even want my parents to see CATS; it's just tacky!
